Indra Jatra
22/09/2010 - 27/09/2010
Place: Kathmandu Durbar Square
The festival is in celebration of Indra, the god of rain who came to Kathmandu to steal a flower for his mother who was imprisoned until he revealed his identity. In return he took those who had died back to heaven and promised to spread dew over their crops over the following months. On the third and final day of the festival, the representation of the Goddess Kumari is taken out in a procession in a chariot. The festivities come to an end in the evening when a long wooden pole erected on the first day is lowered with religious ceremonies, animal sacrifices and ritual gestures.
